So after my little adventure with Hardy Heron almost three weeks ago, I can proudly say that my home PC is now a true-blue Linux box. Everyone at home now uses the OS for their browsing, e-mail and word processing duties. No complaints so far from my users at home. It seems they have adjusted pretty easily or don’t actually care whatever the operating system is as long as everything just works.
Almost everything I need is now running on the Ubuntu box. I used Wine to install my personal accounting software, Photoshop CS2 and Dreamweaver 8. I had a few minutes of using GIMP to edit and crop the picture on my about page but that was my only time to ever use the image editing software.
At the office, I still work on both a Mac and a Windows box for my real design work only because the existing workflow and everyone around me have yet to adjust. Also Creative Suite 3 apps don’t work yet with WINE. I know, life sucks, not everyone seems to be on the same level with me on this but that will soon change.
Working on the Linux command line has given me enough practice to be confident enough to actually setup my own slice at Slicehost. This has been one of my goals ever since when I started out with Ubuntu.
My article on setting up my very first VPS will come next.

Congratulations on the Ubuntu switch!

Edited a few pics but I really can’t use it for work.
I am so used to Photoshop’s power and functionality GIMP can’t really keep up in a production environment
I’m running Hardy Heron 8.04 beta which is due for release in three days.
If you’re having problems with the Live CD then try to download the alternative desktop CD. It’s possible to download an official torrent from one of their many mirror locations.
Thanks we’ll try it on your laptop real soon
my last try on linux is pedora core 2, that was years ago and haven’t tried any new flavor.. glad to know this ubuntu is running like windows already hehehe..
ang hirap kasi ng textmode e lol!
hehe.. yepz, PS and GIMP are worlds apart.
I don’t have Photoshop at work, so I really, really dread image-editing tasks (because then I will have to work on GIMP)..

Great for you, I recently had an old laptop that kept giving me fits. I kept getting “there is a problem with the cooling system” and “shut down now”. It had windows xp with all the latest updates. Funny thing is I ran diagnostics and the temp was no where near the levels that would cause a melt down. I installed Ubuntu as a dual boot and never got the message at all. Now it is strictly an Ubuntu laptop, Windows removed.

Switching to Ubuntu is something a lot of Windows users should consider.
Imagine never having to buy a buggy OS that gets updated to be more buggy.
Ubuntu is really great! It now runs on one my new VPS, where I will soon transfer this site, hopefully within the month.
I love the last line. heheh It couldn’t be more precise than that. heheh
I tried switching to Ubuntu - but it was actually a lot harder than I thought it would’ve been. Either way, my Windows Withdrawal symptoms were starting to show, so I went back.
Ubuntu’s still on my VPC though : )
And as for an alternative to Gimp…what about Gimpshop? I heard it organizes Gimp a lot more similarly to Photoshop - although I haven’t tried it myself, I thought it’d be interesting to mention.
Have a nice day.

I still prefer Photoshop and wait or help to actually make it work on Ubuntu.
Adobe should start making an Ubuntu release for Photoshop and also for the rest of their Creative Suite applications.
[...] about Ubuntu was sometime April of this year over at Archon-Digital’s blog when he made an article of his switch to Ubuntu. Even after reading his post, I still didn’t get the idea of what exactly Ubuntu is all [...]
